• Damsel In Dating Distress

Hey everyone! Hope you had a lovely Christmas and New Year break. While I'm still on a dating hiatus, this hasn't stopped my passion and thirst for knowledge on all things Dating & Relationships. As a quick update on what I've been up to recently besides doing a bunch of life admin, I've been focusing more on my writing, prepping for my podcast (eeek!!!), listening to podcasts, reading, researching, watching geeky documentaries, and even adjusting my dating profiles across the apps ready for when I eventually get back on the market! 😁

The dating hiatus has also given me time to think about what I actually want in terms of the romantic aspect of my life. I dated a few guys between March - September last year, and while it was lovely getting to know people and enjoy their company... deep down, I wasn't even sure why I was dating them. Was it to cure boredom, loneliness, or do I simply like the idea of having someone there when it's convenient? Emotionally and investment wise, it was never that deep. Either way, I'm still figuring that out, I'm still figuring me out... it's a complicated but interesting journey, and currently it's the only relationship I'm willing to put 100% into.

Anyway, enough of my rambling, let's get back track... so I was catching up with my friend over Zoom the other day and we were discussing the pros and cons of all the dating apps we've ever used. It was an amusing but informative conversation, but then hit me... it seems I've limited myself to using just the mainstream apps which include: Tinder, Bumble, Hinge, POF, OKCupid, Coffee Meets Bagel and Match. Right now, there are approximately 8,000 dating apps worldwide... and I've tried just 7 out of 8,000!? That's less than 1%! Shortly after my call, I decided to do a bit of research on some low-profile dating apps. The good thing about niche dating apps is that you can drastically narrow down the dating pool, and in this day and age it seems there's a dating app for everyone. I think using niche apps is a great shout because you're going in knowing there'll be at least one of many things you might have in common. While Tinder continues to dominate the market with around 57 million active users globally, competing apps have had to focus on a specific unique selling point, for example: on Bumble women make the first move, on Happn you match with people you've walked past in real life. As the online dating industry becomes more saturated, new apps are having to really set themselves apart by honing in on interests or requirements that streamline the dating pool for us romantic hopefuls. Admittedly, I have some knowledge on about 4 or 5 niche dating apps (though never tried), but after trawling through Google for a good few hours, making notes and having a little chuckle to myself along the way; I can happily say that I've now familiarised myself with another 35! Can I just add... there are some real outlandish app options out there! 🤣 With all my research, it'd be rude not to at least share my top 5 niche apps... so here are the ones that made me laugh or I felt had a good spin to it. BRISTLR I'm not gonna lie, I do like a bearded man... or at least a man with some decent looking stubble! So if you're anything like me, look no further than the dating app that pairs you with these particular types of stud muffins! 🤣🧔🏻🧔🏾

TOFFEE Like it or loathe it, I actually found the concept very interesting. And if you haven't heard of Toffee before, well it's basically the private school-only dating app that background checks anyone who signs up. So if you went to a public school...(me 🙋🏻‍♀️) you won't be getting in! No surprise that this app has caused quite a stir and a division of opinion; while some claim it's "Tinder for toffs", others wonder if it's simply just another filter you can use to help you find the right person.

TWINDOG Firstly, I can't figure out whether this app is to match the dogs, or the owners.. or both?! But from what I've gathered, my guess is that it enables dog owners to make friends with other dog owners, which is sweet 😊 It's a location-based app, and all you have to do after signing up is take a photo of you and your dog, upload and begin swiping. Once you've matched with another dog owner, you can chat, share photos and arrange a walk in the park for all four of you!

Now I'm not a Star Wars fanatic but I can be very nerdy at times! 🤓 Which is why I found this unofficial dating site (not app) super cute! It appears "love knows no bounds or distance to those connected by the Force." — that strapline seriously cracked me up! 🤣 So for those who never want to explain another Star Wars film reference on date again, this site might be the one for you!

MOUSE MINGLE Yes... yes... and yes! Even if I'm not looking for love, I would jump on this anyway! A dating site for Disney fans!? Ugh... this is everything!! Mouse Mingle promises to help people find their "Mickey" or "Minnie". Unfortunately the app is only available in the US (boo!), but I'm hoping they bring it across the pond ASAP. I guess dreams really can come true! 💕 Dating apps have been going on for a while, and are a huge industry. Globally, over 200 million people use digital dating services every month, and that's set to increase! I'd love to hear about some of your favourite niche dating apps, feel free to comment below!
